Libya’s Oldest Woman Dies at 114

Zuwara— The Libyan centenarian and oldest resident of the city of Zuwara, Hajja Ta’leiz Sassi Al-Ghardaq, passed away on Saturday at the age of 114, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and vivid stories about Libya’s modern history.

Salim Rami Al-Ghardaq, one of her family members, posted the news of her death on his Facebook page, saying: “My aunt, my father’s sister, has passed away. May God have mercy on her with your vast mercy, O Most Merciful.”

Hajja Taliz was born in 1911, the year during which Italy invaded Libya and occupied it, and witnessed the most important historical milestones of the country, starting with the struggle against colonialism, through the declaration of independence in 1951, and the political and social transformations that the country witnessed in the following decades.

She also witnessed World War II, the monarchical era, the Qathafi 42 years rule and the events of 2011, which made her a living memory of the country’s history. She was known among her relatives and neighbors for her kindness, righteousness, and religious commitment.

In an interview with “My Homeland” platform in 2022, Al-Ghardaq said that she was 111 years old, and that she had lived through many historical situations and events throughout her life, and witnessed the periods in which Libya suffered from poverty before the discovery of oil.

She stressed that Libyans are accustomed to gathering and spreading love among themselves on religious and social occasions. On holidays, families and neighbors are accustomed to meeting and holding friendly gatherings, and distributing sweets to children.

The news of her death spread quickly on social media, where hundreds expressed their sadness at her passing, and many considered her a symbol of authenticity and community cohesion in Zuwara, and recalled her role in conveying Libyan values ​​and traditions to new generations.
