Tripoli— The Commander of the US 6th Fleet Vice Admiral Jeffery T. Anderson arrived in Benghazi Monday morning on board of the USS Mount Whitney, flagship of the US 6th Fleet along with the US Special Envoy to Libya and the US Charge d’Affaires in Libya.
The American delegation was welcomed by the Secretary-General of the General Command, of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Lieutenant General Khairi Al-Tamimi, the Chief of Staff of the Security Forces, Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Naval Forces, Lieutenant General Shuaib Al-Saber, according to a statement on General Tamimi’s Facebook platform.
The welcoming ceremony took place on board of USS Mount Whitney, which docked inside the Benghazi naval base. A meeting was held between the Libyan and US officials during which the two parties discussed ways to “enhance security and military cooperation, in addition to fighting terrorism,” the statement said.
The US Embassy in Libya said in a statement that the discussions in Benghazi dealt with “enhancing US-Libyan military cooperation and US support for Libyan efforts to reunify Libyan military forces.”
Vice Admiral Anderson visited Tripoli on the previous day Sunday accompanied by Ambassador Richard Norland, the US Special Envoy to Libya, and Jeremy Berndt, Charge d’Afffaires.
The US Embassy said that during a meeting in Tripoli, Libyan military and political officials held a discussion with Anderson, Richard Norland and Jeremy Berndt that focused on “strengthening US-Libyan military ties and helping Libyans advance their military integration efforts. The US remains committed to partnering with Libyans across the security, economic and political domains to increase stability and prosperity.”
