Libya to Plant 100 Million Trees, PM Dbeibeh

Tripoli_ The Libya Greens Initiative (LGI) that is aiming to plant 100 million trees all over Libya has been approved by the head of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdulhamid Dbeibeh on Wednesday 18 December during a meeting in the capital city of Tripoli.

The initiative will be implemented under the supervision of the Executive Team for Presidential Initiatives and Strategic Projects (ETPISP), and in partnership with local institutions and foreign oil companies.

Mr. Dbeibeh signed the document establishing the Libya Greens Fund in a ceremony, which aims to support and sustain the initiative throughout its various stages. The work phases begin with planning and environmental survey to select sites, then planting trees, followed by follow-up and maintenance to ensure the success of the project, according to GNU’s official Facebook platform “Hakoumtna”.

The initiative aims to enhance vegetation cover, combat desertification, and achieve sustainable development, by planting more than 10 types of trees, including, royal, eucalyptus, maringa, olive, pine, carob, camphor, acacia, and casuarina among others. The initiative will be implemented on a total area of ​​150,000 hectares distributed over 60 sites across the country, Hakoumtna said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dbeibeh said that the initiative comes within the framework of his government’s policy to promote forestation and protect the environment, stressing the importance of cooperation between local institutions and foreign companies to achieve the ambitious goals of the initiative.

The initiative will also undertake a campaign that focuses on improving air quality, combating climate change, and enhancing biodiversity, while employing land sustainably and integrating it into long-term development projects, it said.

The representatives of participating foreign companies praised the importance of the project, affirming their full support for contributing to achieving its environmental and development goals.

The LGI represents a distinguished model of partnership between different sectors in the country which, if successful, it would help Libya achieve sustainable environmental development goals.
