Al-Qubba_ There is considerable need for a unified government in Libya that can move towards organizing presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, both the Speaker of Parliament Agila Saleh and UNSMIL’s Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Stephanie Koury confirmed during a meeting on Monday in al-Qubba city in eastern Libya.

Mr. Saleh reiterated that the HoR has been cooperating with the United Nations and the international community and committed to the political agreement and the recommendations of the 6+6 Committee, according a statement on its official Facebook page.

On her part, Ms. Khoury stressed her continuous and serious efforts to rebuild trust between the various parties by bringing their viewpoints closer together.

In reality, Libya is ruled by the Government of National Unity in the northwest of the country headed by Acting Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh since 2021, while the House of representatives-appointed Government of National Stability (GNS) headed by Acting Prime Minister Osama Hammad since May 2023 rules the east and southwest regions.

A unified government could put an end to the divisions of executive institutions and their subsequent unilateral decisions that undermine Libya’s sovereignty and plunge the country into further sociopolitical, economic and financial crises.
