Tripoli— The Office of the Public Prosecutor has launched an investigation into the killing of Brigadier General Ali Al-Rayani of the Libyan military. He was attacked by an armed group in his home on Sunday morning which is located in a southern suburb of the capital Tripoli.
The head of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdulhamid Dbeibeh mourned Al-Rayani on Sunday evening saying “with deep sorrow and grief, I mourn Brigadier General Ali Ramadan Al-Rayani, who was martyred today while defending the sanctity of his home and family against a treacherous criminal group.”
“I have directed the Military Public Prosecution to open an urgent and comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances of this heinous crime, determine who was behind it, and its motive,” Dbeibeh added in a statement on his Facebook platform.
“My sincere condolences go to the family of the late Brigadier General, his comrades, and all members of the military establishment,” he said.
According to media sources, General Al-Rayani managed to kill three of his attackers before his death.
Sources in the Public Prosecutor’s Office told Al-Wasat newspaper that the Office has officially received three suspects in the connection with the case. “They have been referred to the forensic medicine department to complete the necessary examinations and technical procedures to uncover the precise circumstances of the incident,” Al-Wasat said.
The same sources told Al-Wasat that investigations are proceeding at a rapid pace and under the direct supervision of the Public Prosecution, as part of intensive efforts to uncover the details of the crime and fully determine legal responsibilities.
Earlier in the day, the Tripoli Judicial Police (JP) said that it “categorically denies what was circulated regarding an attack by an armed group on a citizen’s home, falsely claiming to be members of the JP,” according to a statement published on its Facebook platform.
The Judicial Police said its members “are committed to performing their duties in accordance with the law and regulations governing security work,” stressing that “malicious allegations aim to undermine the efforts of the JP and its institutions.”
The JP called on all media outlets and social media users to “examine the accuracy and credibility of these reports and not to be drawn into rumors,” stressing that it “reserves its legal right to take the necessary measures against those who spread such false news.”
