Libya: Al-Mishri Accuses GNU of Interfering in HCS’ Affairs

Tripoli— As the crisis of the Libyan political process deepens, the disputed head of the High Council of State (HCS) Khalid Al-Mishri accused Thursday the Government of National Unity (GNU) of interfering in the work of the HCS, urging the Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh to help achieving consensus within the council instead.

“We are surprised that the PM of GNU met the imposters and usurpers of power in the HCS as well as his talk about respecting the judiciary, when the election of those sitting before him was declared invalid by a judicial ruling,” Al-Mishri said in a statement published on his Facebook platform.

Mr. Dbeibeh met on 29 January 2025 an HCS delegation headed by Mohamed Takala, who is competing with Al-Mishri on the presidency of the council. The PM praised his efforts in “protecting legislative institutions from attempts by some to impose foreign interference, and underlined the importance of preserving the independence of the national decision in a way that serves the interests of the Libyan people and enhances the stability of the state,” a statement by the GNU said.

On Friday, Al-Mishri said that intensive meetings are being held between members of HCS and those of the Parliament in order to outline the main elements of the coming political phase.

Speaking to radio Al-Zawiya, he said “We are committed to moving forward towards a better future as efforts are being made to overcome challenges and meet the aspirations of the people to build a strong and prosperous state.”
