Tripoliā€”PM Abdulhamid Dbeibeh held talks Wednesday with the Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour on ways to enhance the rule of law, ensure its enforcement in a way that achieves justice and preserves citizens’ rights and respect of human rights principles, according to a statement by the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) official Facebook platform, Hakomitna.

The meeting comes at a time of a political controversy ongoing in Italy as a result of placing the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni under investigation on the grounds of releasing a Libyan police officer who was previously arrested in Turin on orders from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“A number of legal files were discussed, as well as ways to overcome obstacles that hinder the implementation of judicial rulings and procedures, in a way that ensures the achievement of justice and the establishment of the rule of law,” said the statement.

However, there has been no mention of whether the two men had dealt with the Italian political developments or their effect on the Libyan and Italian bilateral relations.

Al-Sour stressed the importance of cooperation between the executive and judicial authorities to ensure the implementation of laws with justice and transparency, and to enhance citizens’ confidence in official institutions, according to the statement.

He also “stressed the need to respect human rights principles in all legal procedures, and to ensure that they are not violated under any circumstances,” it said.

For his part, the Prime Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the Public Prosecution Office in implementing laws and combating corruption and crime, praising the role played by the Public Prosecution in establishing justice and protecting rights.
