Benghazi—Amid a rising political tension in Libya and the region, the top Egypt’s intelligence official meets with Khalifa Haftar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces. The “latest regional and local developments and the political process in Libya” were the focus of discussion, according to a statement released by the General Command Office.

The head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, Hassan Rashad, arrived in Benghazi on Sunday morning and immediately held talks at the General Command headquarters.

The two parties stressed “the importance of supporting efforts to advance the political process in Libya, which contributes to achieving security and stability in the region.”

This comes a day after a high-level delegation representing the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli visited Damascus and held a meeting with the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which prospects for cooperation in the political, economic and security fields were the focus of the talks.

Mr. Rashad conveyed the greetings and appreciation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Haftar, stressing “the depth of the historical relations that bind the two brotherly peoples of Egypt and Libya,” the statement said.

Libya is experiencing a division between two governments, one in the west of the country (the interim national unity government) headed by Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, and another that extends its control over the east and south of the country headed by Osama Hamad.

On Friday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agila Saleh, said that Libya is moving steadily towards forming a new unified government in coordination between the HoR and the High State Council (HSC).
